CORVO ISLAND

Corvo Island is the smallest of the Azores Archipelago, located in the Western Group, north of Flores Island, the only municipality that has no parish.

The island occupies a total area of 17.13 km², with 6.5 km long by 4 km wide. It is located at 39 ° 40' North latitude and 31 ° 05' West longitude.

Dista of the island of Flores, Santa Cruz das Flores 13 miles and 10 nautical miles from Ponta Delgada (Flores). It is formed by a single extinct volcanic mountain - Monte Gordo, crowned with a wide crater of abatimento called locally Caldeirão, with 3.7 km of perimeter and 300 meters deep and where is the Lagoa do Caldeirão. There are several lagoons and small "islets", two long and five round. The highest point on the island is Morro dos Homens on the southern edge of the Caldeirão, 718 meters above sea level.

The climate is humid, with 915.7 mm of average annual precipitation, but mild, although windy, with an average annual temperature of 17.6°C in the Vila, with average monthly temperatures ranging from 14°C in February to 23°C in August. Corvo Village, also erroneously called Vila Nova do Corvo, is the smallest in the Azores, with 435 residents (in 2011), but currently the population has increased and on the island are living many employees of companies that work here. The only settlement on the island consists of a cluster of low houses with narrow, winding streets that climb up the slopes, known locally as canadas. The area of its municipality corresponds to the entire surface of the island, but Fajã is where all the houses are concentrated.

During the winter, the maritime connections, although regular, are strongly conditioned by the state of the sea and by the wind since the Casa Port, the small pier that serves the island, does not provide shelter that allows for operation in adverse weather. However, during the summer, there are several connections per day, with the Atlânticoline boat "Ariel" and fast boats that make the trip between Corvo and Santa Cruz das Flores in about 45 minutes.

Throughout the year Sata has flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with direct connections to Flores, Faial and Sao Miguel, in the months of July and August there are also flights on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"The people of Corvo are genuinely Sympathetic and see the arrival of visitors, as a pleasant interruption in their daily lives."
